Fiji launches national biodiversity action plan

Fijian Ministry of Waterways and Environment launched on Friday its five-year 2020-2025 national biodiversity action plan, setting out an ambitious vision on how the ministry work to in partnership with experts and key stakeholders to conserve the island nation's biodiversity.

According to a government statement on Friday, while launching the five-year plan, the Minister for Waterways and Environment Mahendra Reddy said it was aligned to the commitments for the conservation of biological diversity to deliver environmental objectives for 2020-2025.

"This document is the product from a visionary process culminating in a bold, forward thinking plan focusing on environmental protection, conservation, institutional and industry practice excellence reflected in our communities for the benefit of all Fijians," Reddy said.

The minister said the national biodiversity action plan recognizes crucial national resources and further highlights practical ways forward for addressing gaps in the knowledge, particularly with regards to better understanding the specific conservation needs.

The plan will strengthen the sustainable use, management and protection of the country's biodiversity, he said.
