BERLIN, Sept. 6 (APD) - Chinese tech giant Huawei unveiled on Friday its latest 5G processor, Kirin 990, in IFA consumer electronics show here, expected to take on competitors such as Qualcomm.
The new processor will power Huawei’s upcoming flagship smartphone called the Mate 30, which will be released later this month in a bid to rival Apple’s expected new iPhones.
Kirin 990 is an all-in-one artificial intelligence and 5G chip, which is also available in a 4G version. The 7 nanometer chips are faster and more energy efficient than rivals’ 5G processors, like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855, Huawei claimed.
Seven nanometer technology is the latest in the semiconductor industry and allows for smaller components that are more powerful and energy efficient than their predecessors.
The launch of Huawei’s new processor was held on the backdrop of the United States pressures on the firm set since earlier this year. The United States put Huawei in its entity list that limits Huawei’s operational ability to buy and license technology from the United State firms.
Huawei’s market is strongly attached to the United States counterparts particularly for its laptops and smartphones.
