1.3 million in U.S. seek unemployment assistance

The U.S. economy is stumbling as the viral outbreak intensifies, threatening to slow hiring and deepening the uncertainty for employees, consumers and companies across the country.

More than 1.3 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week. An indicator that many are still out of work in the face of the COVID–19 resurgence.

Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Michigan and Texas are some of the states that have seen recent spikes in new coronavirus cases forcing them to halt reopening of businesses.

The previous week's record of unemployment was slightly higher at 1.4 million.
