Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Entebbe on Monday for an official tour of Uganda, as he seeks to bolster his country's influence on the continent.

During his stay in the East African country, Netanyahu is expected to meet President Yoweri Museveni for bilateral talks that may result in the signing of various agreements.

Before his departure from Israel, the 70-year-old expressed optimism that the visit would yield positive results.

"I am leaving now on another visit to Africa, my fifth in the past 3.5 years. Israel is returning to Africa in a big way; Africa has already returned to Israel. These are very important diplomatic, economic and security ties that will yet be told about. Today, I am traveling to Uganda. We are strengthening ties with this country. At the end of the day, I hope we will have very good news for the State of Israel,” the Israeli Prime Minister said before his trip.

Netanyahu has been accompanied on the trip by his wife Sara.

The Israeli Prime Minister's visit to Uganda comes just days after his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, which resulted in a joint press conference announcing a White House proposal for the creation of a Palestinian state.

Netanyahu was also last week formally indicted on corruption charges, becoming the first sitting Prime Minister to face trial in Israel's history.

The Israeli Prime Minister has been charged with fraud, bribery and breach of trust in three separate corruption cases.
