Portuguese police detain 258 people over chaotic weekend

The Portuguese police force announced on Monday it detained 258 people over the weekend, with tens of thousands of Spanish football fans arriving in Portugal's capital Lisbon to watch the European Champions League final.

According to the PSP police force, 31 of these detentions were due to theft while 17 were due to drug trafficking. The police also seized five firearms and 2,400 doses of drugs.

The report also stated that 15 detentions were made of resistance and bullying of employees, 11 because of illegal possession of arms and eight due to domestic violence and 13 due to illegal gambling.

Real Madrid defeated Atletico de Madrid 4-1 in the 120-minute match on Saturday night at the Luz stadium in Lisbon amid cheers of over 60,000 fans, most of whom came from the neighboring Spain over the weekend. The Spanish club secured a record 10th title in the competition, 12 years after their ninth victory.

Over 60,000 Spanish fans arrived to watch the European Champions League final in Lisbon's Luz Stadium on Saturday night when Real Madrid defeated its city rival Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the 120 minute match, with thousands more swarming the streets to celebrate.

This led Portugal to launch a "big security operation," with around 8,000 police officers patrolling the city this weekend.
