Eleven miners are trapped underground after a coal mine in north China’s Shanxi Province was flooded on Monday night.

Six of the trapped miners have been confirmed alive. Four of them are in good condition while the other two are injured.

The flooding occurred in a mine in Qingxu County around 11:40 p.m. Four of the 11 trapped miners escaped immediately to a refuge chamber. They made a phone call to people on the ground and checked the safe area of the mine. They saw another two miners were trapped on a conveyer belt and were injured. But they couldn’t reach those two miners due to the flooding.

A rescue operation is underway as six machines have been pumping water out from the mine around the clock. The cause of the flooding is still unknown.
