At least two people were killed and many people trapped in debris after a four-story building collapsed in Thane near the Indian financial hub Mumbai Tuesday night, said local media.

Local TV channel Times Now said at least two were confirmed dead in the incident, the second such incident in less than a week in a major Indian city after five were killed in a building collapse in New Delhi earlier this month.

While 10 people have been rescued from debris so far, at least 20 families were believed to be staying at the house when it collapsed at around 23:00 p.m. local time in a congested areas, said Indo-Asian News Service.

The building, called Matry Chhaya in Thakurli of Thane, is located at a residential zone with narrow lanes and mushrooming unauthorized structures, making rescue work difficult.

Fire officials said buildings neighboring Matry Chhaya also suffered damages due to the incident.

Eight fire engines have rushed to the spot and heavy rains hampered relief and rescue efforts, said the report. Enditem
