Vietnam has carried out nearly 8,000 administrative inspections and 190,000 specialized ones in the fight against corruption since the beginning of 2014, said Huynh Phong Tranh, Vietnam's inspector general.

Tranh made the remarks in a report on the work of prevention and fight against corruption in 2014 sent to the country's National Assembly, reported the website of Vietnam's Government Inspectorate on Monday.

According to the report, so far this year, some 27 trillion Vietnamese dong (1.28 billion U.S. dollars) has been returned to the state budget while 1,700 groups and 3,000 individuals have been proposed to take responsibility for their violations.

Tranh said in the report that during the period, the police at all levels have handled 415 cases with 1,031 defendants guilty of corruption. The losses have been found out to be over 6.7 trillion Vietnamese dong (317.5 million U.S. dollars) with 1.5 trillion Vietnamese dong (over 71 million U.S. dollars) returned to the state budget.

All-level people's procuracy agencies have prosecuted 329 cases with 751 defendants against corruption while courts at all levels have opened first instance trials for 287 cases with 675 defendants over the charge of corruption, said the report.

However, Vietnam is still facing challenges in the prevention and fight against corruption, such as complicated corruption activities and more number of economic crimes in fields of finance, banking and stock, the report said.
