Brazil to extradite wanted Mexican drug lord to U.S.

Brazil's Supreme Court Tuesday approved the extradition to the United States of suspected Mexican drug lord Jose Diaz Barajas, who was arrested in the country last year.

Diaz, 50, was arrested in June 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, where he had travelled to watch games of the 2014 World Cup.

The Mexican national is wanted in the United States for international drug trafficking and related crimes, according to the Supreme Court, whose decision was unanimous.

The U.S. Department of Justice accuses Diaz of conspiring to fabricate methamphetamine, smuggling it into the country and of laundering the money made from his drug dealing activities.

The extradition order was granted to the United States on the condition that, if Diaz is found guilty, the year he spent imprisoned in Brazil will be deducted from his sentence.

Furthermore, Brazil obtained the pledge that Diaz will not be condemned to life imprisonment or to more than 30 years in jail, the maximum sentence under Brazilian law. Enditem
