At least 49 people were killed and 247 others injured on Saturday during clashes between supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and security forces across Egypt, health ministry said Sunday.

"The victims were killed in the governorates of Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Fayoum, Ismailia, Assiut, Beni Sweif and Menia," Ahmed Kamel, the health ministry's media spokesman told Xinhua.

All the hospitals across the country have been put on high alert, Kamel said, adding that many citizens have responded to the ministry's appeals for blood donation.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian police arrested on Saturday 1,079 Morsi 's loyalists over charges of riots.

The clashes and arrests came as hundreds of thousands of Egyptians flocked to the country's main squares to mark the third anniversary of toppling former president Hosni Mubarak.

Recently, Morsi's supporters called for an-eighteen-day protest ending on Feb. 18 against the army-installed interim government.
