Russia believes the Group of Twenty (G20), composed of major advanced and emerging economies, is more influential than the Group of Eight (G8) which involves world leading industrial nations, the Kremlin said Monday.

"The G20 format appears to be more representative and more capable in today's international situation. This format has a much wider potential," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.

He added that Russia is beginning to lose interest in the G8.

Russia's membership in the G8 was suspended in March 2014 by the other seven member states over Moscow's role in the Ukraine crisis.
