At least 12 people have been injured after a speeding passenger train came to an abrupt halt in the northern Indian state of Haryana, railway officials said Thursday.

"The incident took place at Gharaunda station in the state's Karnal district late Wednesday night when the driver of Himalayan Queen Express train applied emergency brakes when the station in-charge raised an alarm," a senior railway official said.

"The train was travelling at high speed and as a result, some 12 passengers, mostly children, sustained injuries. They have been treated at Gharaunda station itself by railway doctors who rushed to the spot," he added.

"A probe has been ordered into the incident," the official said.
