Germany is going to receive a pair of giant pandas from China on June 24.
Berlin Zoo stated that Meng Meng (Female) and Jiao Qing (Male) will take a 12-hour flight from Chengdu to Berlin with the company of keepers. “Meng Meng” means “sweet dream” and “Jiao Qing” can be translated as “darling”.
To welcome the two pandas, Berlin Zoo has spent nearly US$11.1 million on building a panda garden for them.
According to the agreement signed with the China Wildlife Conservation Association in April, Berlin Zoo will keep the pair for 15 years with an annual rent of US$1 million, which will be mainly put towards wildlife protection in China.
Germany has gone five years without pandas since its last panda, Bao Bao, died aged 34 in 2012.
