The New York Police Department said one male suspect was taken into custody after a blast on Monday morning at the Port Authority Bus Terminal near Times Square.

A total of four people were injured, New York city's fire department said.

The city's mayor Bill de Blasio held a press conference after the incident. He said one individual conducted the “unsuccessful” terrorist attack, adding that a "low-tech" device detonated in the blast.

The suspect has been identified as Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old male.

The White House said US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the explosion.

Passengers were evacuated and the police also warned citizens to avoid the area.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal is the main gateway for interstate buses into Manhattan in New York City, serving more than 65 million people a year.
