The Bavarian state government in southern Germany said Sunday they still haven't been able to contact 46 of more than 900 travelers who tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Local officials said that tens of thousands of travelers entering the country had to wait for weeks to receive their coronavirus test results because of an unexpected high demand for testing and problems with the software at new test centers at highway rest stops near the southern border.

Officials are concerned that people who have been infected could spread the virus.

In addition, travelers arriving at Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome from Croatia, Greece, Malta and Spain lined up for coronavirus testing on Sunday after Italy issued an order last week requiring testsfor all travelers.

Instead of being tested at the airport, travelers can also choose to be tested at local public health offices within 48 hours of arrival.

On Saturday, the country's daily number of COVID-19 infections topped 600 for the first time since May, as more people abroad started to take vacations in Italy.

France also recorded its highest single-day rise in COVID-19 infections on Sunday since May. Many blamed people who traveled for work, weddings, family gatherings and annual summer vacations for the resurgence in recent weeks.

To contain the virus, the French government is now enforcing wider mask wearing and stricter safety measures to protect migrant workers.

Britain also re-imposed quarantine measures Saturday for travelers returning from France.
