Local and federal law enforcement officials were searching a Mississippi university campus on Monday after an active shooter shot to death a male professor and left the campus on edge for hours.

Ethan Schmidt, an assistant professor of American history at Delta State University in Mississippi, was shot in the head while in his office, said local deputy coroner Murray Roark at a press conference.

Authorities said the shooter remained at large but a geography instructor from the university was named a "person of interest" by police.

Meanwhile, investigators in a town 300 miles away said the campus shooting could be connected to another homicide which happened Monday morning.

The university announced around 10:45 a.m. local time that the campus was on lockdown and advised students, faculty and staff to take shelter and stay away from windows.

The university later said no students were involved in the campus shooting. Enditem
