Cambodia, Malaysia sign deals on recruitment of Cambodian workers, maids

Cambodia and Malaysia signed on Thursday two Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) on the recruitment of Cambodian workers and maids to Malaysia, said a press statement released by Cambodia's Labor Ministry.

The MoUs were inked by Malaysian Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem and Cambodian Labor Minister Ith Samheng in Kuala Lumpur, the statement said.

"The two MoUs are important legal instruments for protecting workers'rights and benefits,"it said.

"The MoUs will also help enhance labor cooperation between the two countries in accordance with the framework of ASEAN Community integration."

In October 2011, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen suspended sending housemaids to Malaysia after reports of physical abuses and law violation by Malaysian employers.

Currently, there are about 8,000 registered Cambodian workers in Malaysia with 3,000 of them being maids, according to Malaysia' s Bernama news agency. Enditem
