2013 Nobel Prize award ceremony held in Stockholm

Nobel laureates in physics, chemistry, medicine and economic science attended the 2013 Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in Stockholm Concert Hall on Tuesday.

The winner of Nobel Prize in Literature Alice Munro, who was unable to travel to Sweden for health reason, was represented by her daughter Jenny Munro at the award ceremony.

Carl-Henrik Heldin, Chairman of the Board of Nobel Foundation, addressed the ceremony with a warm welcome to the winners and their families for attending the ceremony in Sweden.

Nelson Mandela, who was the Nobel Prize winner in peace in 1993, was honored in Heldin's speech.

The laureates then were awarded the prize, consisting of the Nobel diploma, medal and a document confirming the prize amount of 8 million Swedish kronor (about 1 million U.S. dollars) by King of Sweden Carl XVIGustaf.

Nobel Prize in physics this year was won by Francois Englert and Peter W. Higgs, while Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded to Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel.

The prize in medicine this year went to James E. Rothman, Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Sudhof, and Nobel Prize in economics was shared by Eugene F. Fama, Lars Peter Hansen and Robert J. Shiller.

The Nobel Prize laureates were also going to attend a gala banquet a few blocks away at the Stockholm city hall after the ceremony.

The Nobel Prizes are usually announced in October and handed out every year on Dec. 10, the anniversary of the 1896 death of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish industrialist and the inventor of dynamite.
