Three people, including two assailants, were killed and seven others were wounded after an explosion ripped through a mosque in the western Afghan province of Herat on Sunday.

The blast occurred at midday after two suicide bombers attempted to enter Nabi-e-Akram Mosque, but were pushed back by security guards.

One terrorist detonated his explosive jacket near the entrance of the building after a security guard identified and intercepted the attackers. The second assailant was shot dead by the security guard.

ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack via a statement released online. However, no evidence for the claim has yet been provided.

Security forces have cordoned off the area.
