At least 23 people were killed and another 37 were injured Tuesday when a passenger bus crashed in western Haiti, authorities said.

Jean Jude Leandre, a justice of the peace in Haiti's Ouest department, told the Haiti Press Network the injured were taken to the Notre-Dame Hospital in Petit-Goave.

According to authorities, the bus was traveling between the capital Port-au-Prince and Chambellan, a city in the department of Grand-Anse, 280 km to the west, when it careened off the road and into a ravine.

The accident took place along National Highway 1, near the town of Pont Sonde, 96 km north of the capital.

Such accidents are common in Haiti, due to poor condition of roadways.

In June, an accident in the same area left 13 people dead, including Julionel Anelus, a deputy of the National Assembly.

In May, another accident also killed 23 people in Roseaux, not far from Tuesday's crash.
