Thailand's National Legislative Assembly (NLA) on Tuesday decided to postpone a meeting to deliberate an impeachment motion against former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra from Wednesday to Nov. 28.

The decision was made after Yingluck's lawyers submitted a request that the deliberation should be postponed by 30 days considering the former premier had not had time to study relevant documents the NLA sent her last Friday, spokesman of the NLA whip Jate Siratharanont said.

NLA meeting regulations require that the defendant in an impeachment case should be notified at least 15 days before a hearing, Jate said.

The decision will be put forward at the NLA's Wednesday meeting for endorsement.

The impeachment bid was filed by the National Anti-Corruption Commission against Yingluck for her alleged dereliction of duty in failing to stop corruption and losses in a controversial rice- pledging scheme.

If impeached, Yingluck could face a five-year ban from politics.

Earlier this month, the NLA accepted an impeachment motion against former Senate speaker Nikhom Wairatpanich and former House speaker Somsak Kiatsuranon. The impeachment debate is slated to start on Nov. 27. Enditem
