Israeli warplanes carried out on Wednesday night airstrikes against military positions in the Gaza Strip in response to earlier firing of rockets from the Hamas-ruled enclave into southern Israel, eyewitnesses and security sources said.

They said that Israeli warplanes hovered over the Gaza Strip, and then several explosions were heard in northern Gaza city after Israeli air-to-ground missiles hit a military post that belongs to Hamas militants.

Medical and firefighting teams were on alert and rushed to the targeted posts. No injuries were reported, but severe damage was caused to the military posts and facilities that were bombarded by the Israeli missiles.

The airstrikes against military posts in the Gaza Strip were carried out a few hours after militants fired earlier on Wednesday afternoon four makeshift rockets that landed on empty fields in southern Israel, no injuries were reported.

In Gaza, no one claimed responsibility for the rockets attack. However, Israeli media, quoting the Israeli army, accused the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement of being behind the rockets attack.

An Israeli army spokesman said that four rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel, where sirens were turned on and the Israeli army's Iron Dome air defense system intercepted two of the rockets and the other two landed on empty fields.

The rockets were fired into Israel in spite of having calm understandings brokered by Egypt, the United Nations and Qatar between Israel and Hamas-led military wings in the Gaza Strip.
