An Israeli medical technology company has developed an effective face mask against coronavirus, with filters for continuous use up to 60 hours, allowing regular breathing and protecting the eyes.
The company, Virimask, located in the city of Tirat Carmel in northern Israel, said on Thursday that the mask could allow medical staff to work for an extended period given the hospital overloads caused by coronavirus morbidity.
Besides doctors and nurses, the mask is mainly suitable for use by dentists, patients with chronic or immune problems, and for flight passengers.
According to the company, the mask is sealed around the face and thus provides 100 percent seal for many hours, before the filter needs to be replaced.
Noam Gavriely, the company's founder and mask developer, told Xinhua that the mask filters 99.25 percent of particles sized over 0.1 microns while the coronavirus' size is about 0.12 microns.
Gavriely, a former head of lung physiology unit at Israel's Institute of Technology (Technion), noted that the mask includes special folds of the filter material, which prevents imposing pressure on the user's respiratory system and allows normal breathing.
Eye protection is especially important as the virus can land on the eye's conjunctiva and multiply immediately, he added.
