15 people injured in wreck at Grand Prix of Houston

A race car crash during the Grand Prix of Houston on Sunday sent fence debris flying into the crowd, injuring the driver, a timing official and at least 13 spectators on Sunday, local media reported.

The incident happened during the final lap of the second Indycar race of the Grand Prix at Reliant Park in downtown Houston on Sunday afternoon, local TV ABC13 reported. A racing car made contact with another car and then went airborne into the fence, showering debris into the grandstand and injuring spectators.

Houston Fire Department said that at least 13 spectators were injured. Most of them were being treated at the scene, while two were transported to a hospital, it said. Their conditions are not immediately known.

The driver of the Indycar that crashed, Dario Franchitti, a British, was awake and alert, officials said. He was reportedly in fair condition at a hospital.

A timing official who was standing near the wreck scene was also hospitalized for minor injuries.

Crews are now working to remove the fence debris and clear the scene.

The Grand Prix, which started on Friday, includes IndyCar Series races and several other series of auto races. IndyCars are capable of speeds up to 368 kph.
