The European Union's (EU) winter summit will focus on investments in Europe and the situation in Ukraine, European Council President Donald Tusk said on Wednesday on twitter.

The leaders of the EU countries will gather in Brussels on Thursday and Friday for their last summit this year. However, it will be the first one presided over by Tusk since his taking over the EU helm on the first day of December.

"This meeting will be dedicated to two major issues: investment and the current situation in the Eastern neighborhood," Tusk said in his invitation letter to leaders of the member states.

"We will provide a clear direction for work in the coming months, through the establishment of a new European Fund for Strategic Investments and the improvement of the framework conditions for investment," he said.

He added that the crisis in Ukraine remains a serious concern and the EU need to keep the issue under close review. "It is therefore important that we come out of this meeting with a clear political message," he said.
