Mahesh Babu’s Spyder is riding on very high expectations as it marks the debut of its lead in Tamil filmdom. Speaking at the audio launch of the film earlier this month in Chennai, Mahesh said he felt like a newcomer to enter an industry after 18 years since he started acting.
The film, a bilingual spy-thriller shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil, marks the maiden collaboration of director A.R Murugadoss and Mahesh Babu, who had wanted to collaborate for a decade. While there’s no doubt about the fate of the film in Telugu, one wonders what will happen to the Tamil version as except for the younger viewers, Tamil audiences are not quite familiar with Mahesh’s work.
Like it or not, the general perception of the audiences is that Spyder is still a dubbed Tamil film and not directly shot in the language. Even though Mahesh has dubbed in his own voice for the Tamil version, there isn’t enough buzz about its release in the language.
Nevertheless, it’ll be really interesting to see how the film fares at the box-office. Made on a budget of Rs 125 crore, the film features Mahesh in the role of an intelligence bureau officer and the film, according to Murugadoss, will shine the spotlight on how intelligence agencies work. One of the highlights of the film will be its action, overseen by National Award-winning stunt choreographer Peter Hein, whose work is said to be essential for the film’s story. A roller-coaster fight sequence is expected to leave audiences on the edge of their seats.
The film also stars Rakul Preet Singh, SJ Suryah and Bharath. Suryah plays a serial killer and it is Mahesh’s job to save the world from him. At the recent press meet in Chennai, Suryah had said that Murugadoss has used a high level concept in the first half of the film and it has been treated in a way that even a common man can understand. He also said the second half of Spyder has a segment that will appeal to women.
