2% of Moscow residents could contract COVID-19: mayor

Around two percent of residents in Moscowmay contract the COVID-19 after the city significantly increased its ability to detect novel coronavirus, said the mayor Sergei Sobyanin on Sunday.

Forty thousand nucleic acid tests are been conducted every day in the Russian capital and the number of antibody tests has also increased nine times the last week, he said.

The mayor said Moscow has so far contained the further spread of the novel coronavirus and the infectious figure was among the lowest of any of the world's largest cities hit by the epidemic.

The nationwide case tally rose by 9,623 to 124,054 cases, while Moscow has confirmed 62,658 infections, official data showed on Sunday.

The nationwide fatality in Russia stands at 1,222 and a total of 15,013 COVID-19 patients have recovered.
