MOSCOW, July 6 (Xinhua) -- The Russian navy will get about 40 warships this year, navy commander Nikolai Yevmenov has said.

"This is an indicator that our country is effectively implementing a military shipbuilding program," Yevmenov said in an interview with the defense ministry's official newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda published Monday.

He said that this year has been focused on equipping the surface component of the navy with new-generation frigates of the Admiral Gorshkov type.

At present, the second frigate of this type is conducting tests and it is planned to enter service this month, Yevmenov said.

According to the commander, the Russian Defense Ministry and the high command of the navy pay special attention to the development of nuclear strategic and multi-purposed submarines.

In particular, the Northern Fleet will be replenished with nuclear submarines of the Borey-A and Yasen-M classes, while the Pacific Fleet with a series of six diesel-electric submarines, he said. ■
