The China Enterprises Association in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has donated 48,000 pieces of medical personal protective equipment (PPE) to the PNG government to help contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a press release provided to Xinhua by the association on Friday, the donation includes 38,000 KN95 masks and 10,000 disposable masks and is worth around 200,000 kina (about 56,000 U.S. dollars) in total.

China Enterprises Association President Arthur Wu, on behalf of 33 Chinese companies operating in PNG, handed over the equipment to PNG Minister for Health and HIV/AIDS Jelta Wong on Monday.

Previously, the association, along with the Chinese communities in PNG, had donated 20,000 medical gloves and 450 protective goggles to the PNG side, according to the press release.

Wu said the donation showed the strong commitment of the Chinese companies to PNG's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating a sense of togetherness and friendship between the Chinese companies and the PNG government and the people.

PNG recorded 55 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, which was the highest daily increase so far.

On Thursday, National Pandemic Response Controller David Manning confirmed two more cases, bringing the nation's total to 271, with three virus-related deaths.
