Pakistan condemns U.S. drone strike in South Waziristan

Pakistan on Sunday strongly condemned the U.S. drone strike in the country's tribal region, which killed at least seven people.

"The government of Pakistan strongly condemns the U.S. drone strike that took place in South Waziristan on Sept. 22. These unilateral strikes are a violation of Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity,"a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

Earlier, local media reported that the U.S. spy aircraft fired four missiles on two houses in Shawal area of North Waziristan which borders Afghanistan.

Pakistan warned that the U.S. attacks set dangerous precedents in the inter-state relations.

The spokesman said the attacks have a negative impact on the mutual desire of both countries to forge a cordial and cooperative relationship and to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Pakistan has repeatedly emphasized the importance of bringing an immediate end to drone strikes, the spokesman said in a statement.

He added the government of Pakistan has consistently maintained that drone strikes are counter-productive, entail loss of innocent civilian lives and have human rights and humanitarian implications.

There is no immediate information about the identities of those killed.

The U.S. has carried out 19 strikes mostly in North Waziristan this year, killing over 100 people.

A senior leader of the Haqqani Network, Mulla Sangeen, was killed in a U.S. drone strike this month along with five other people.

Officials said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would raise the issue of the drone strikes in his UN speech this month.
