U.S. stocks open mixed amid earnings

U.S. stocks opened mixed on Wednesday amid a slew of mixed corporate earnings reports.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 35.29 points, or 0.12 percent, to 28,904.38. The SP 500 was up 0.66 points, or 0.02 percent, to 3,283.81. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 9.82 points, or 0.11 percent, to 9,261.15.

The Dow also managed to turn positive after a brief downbeat trading in the morning.

Goldman Sachs and Bank of America were among the companies that delivered quarterly earnings reports Wednesday, with both banks posting mixed results. Goldman Sachs stock fell about 0.7 percent shortly after the opening. Bank of America shares shed 1.9 percent.

Expectations for the corporate earnings season were relatively low. SP 500 earnings are expected to have declined by 2 percent in the fourth quarter, according to FactSet.

Wall Street also awaits the signing of U.S.-China phase-one trade deal.
