India: Traffic chaos expected ahead of Asean summit

NEW DELHI, January 24 (APD) -Traffic jams are expected in Delhi as the city prepares for Asean summit and the Republic Day celebrations this week.

The Asean-India Commemorative Summit will be held on Thursday while the Republic Day parade will take place on Friday.

Roads in some parts of central Delhi will be closed before Friday, to practice for the Republic Day parade. Though metro services will be available, some restrictions might be imposed.

Speaking to the media, Garima Bhatnagar, the joint commissioner of police informed that on the day of the Republic Day parade dress rehearsal, “The C-Hexagon of India Gate will be closed for traffic till the parade crosses Tilak Marg.”

“From 10am, traffic on both stretches on TilakMarg, Bahadur Shah ZafarMarg and NetajiSubhashMarg will be closed. Cross-traffic will be allowed depending on the parade’s movement,” she further said.

Traffic restrictions will also be imposed on Wednesday and Thursday,as leaders of Asean countries will travel from the airport to their hotels in central Delhi and later to the summit venues.

Police chief Dependra Pathak said, “The traffic police will be out in full strength on the roads on these four days to ensure smooth flow of traffic and minimum inconvenience to the commuters.”
