At least eight militants were killed when Pakistani military launched an airstrike in the country's northwest tribal area of Khyber Agency on Friday, local media reported.

Urdu TV channel Abb Takk reported that the jets of Pakistan Air Force pounded two hideouts of suspected militants in Tirah Valley area of Khyber Agency, a semi-autonomous tribal area along Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The strike also left several militants injured, said the report.

Identities of the killed militants have not been revealed by the military, but the area is considered to be the hot bed of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan activity.

Launched in October last year, the Khyber Operation aims at the eradication of the militancy from the Khyber Agency.

According to local media tally, over 500 militants have been killed and more than 400 have surrendered in the operation which was conducted in two phases -- operation Khyber 1 and operation Khyber 2.
