The death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic on the African continent has reached 146 as confirmed positives cases surpassed 4,760 as of Monday, the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

Ahmed Ogwell, deputy director of Africa CDC, confirmed to Xinhua that 46 African countries have reported confirmed cases.

Among the hardest-hit African countries are South Africa with 1,280 confirmed cases, Egypt with 609 cases, Algeria with 511 cases, and Morocco with 479 cases.

More than 470 new confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported across the continent since the center's recent report on Friday.

COVID-19 death toll on the continent, at 136 on Sunday, rose to 146 on Monday.
