Journalist hacked to death while covering protest in India's northeast

A journalist working with a local television news channel was on Wednesday hacked to death by mob in India's northeastern state of Tripura, police said.

Santanu Bhowmick was attacked at Mandai in West Tripura district, about 35 km from Agartala, the capital city of Tripura.

Police have arrested four people belonging to Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) in connection with the murder.

"This afternoon a journalist working with Dinraat, a local cable news channel, had gone to Mandai to cover protests staged by members of the IPFT and Tripura Rajaer Upajati Ganamukti Parishad (TRUGP),"

a local police official said.

The killing evoked widespread condemnation in the state. Authorities have imposed prohibitory orders in Mandai, where situation was tense until late.
