The one buried at the Amphipolis tomb was a great figure or general in the army of Alexander the Great, Katerina Peristeri, the head archaeologist in the excavation team at the ancient city in northern Greece said Tuesday.

Archaeologists unearthed a broken marble door from the tomb of Casta hill a few days ago and according to Peristeri it leaves no doubt that the structure was indeed a burial monument dating to the time of Alexander the Great.

"It is a monument of the last quarter of the 4th century BC and it was a Macedonian tomb, with some different characteristics," she told Mega television on Tuesday.

Made of marble from the nearby island of Thassos, like most of the features uncovered so far, the door was found when archaeologists removed dirt from the second chamber.

As the archaeological excavation at the massive Alexander the Great era tomb, which has attracted international interest since August, gradually continues, the scenarios regarding to the tenant of the tomb multiply.

The final answer to the enigma of the identity will only be revealed in about a month, when the excavation is expected to be completed, Peristeri said.
