The Chinese Olympic swimmer and world record holder Sun Yang is in trouble again -- this time for being in a car accident while driving without a license.

He was punished in February by the Zhejiang Institute of Sports for improper behavior, and now faces a fine and a week-long stay in jail.

On Monday, Hangzhou police said China's first male Olympic swimming champion will be detained for seven days and fined 328 U.S. dollars for driving without a licence.

The Zhejiang College of Sports, to which the double Olympic champion is affiliated, announced Sun's punishment, accusing him of "breaking a series of rules".

SOUNDBITE (CHINESE) ZHANG YADONG, Vice President, Zhejiang College of Sports:

"Sun Yang will be suspended from training, competition and commercial activities from today. We suggest the National team exclude Sun from its training program. His training allowance will also be withheld."

According to the southeastern college, the 22-year-old star broke a number of team rules after the Chinese National Games in September.

The Zhejiang swimming team had been on a break after the Games.

Sun didn't report for training on time after the holiday and has ignored all phone calls and messages.

The college has not been able to contact Sun since Sunday's car accident.

Zhang said, despite the severity of the punishment, the college will not turn its back on Sun.

SOUNDBITE (CHINESE) ZHANG YADONG, Vice President, Zhejiang College of Sports:

"Training suspension will allow Sun Yang to reflect on his behaviour. After his self-examination, we'll continue his training. Only when he strictly obeys discipline and performs well in training, will we restore his right to participate in competitions. If his performances are recognized by the public, he will rejoin the National team training program after approval from the relevant authorities."

On Sunday afternoon, Sun was driving a Porsche Cayenne he claimed to have borrowed from a relative, when he collided with a bus.

Hangzhou police then found the famous swimmer could not provide a driver's licence and questioned him further at a local police station.

In a survey on Sohu.com that attracted 23,900 votes, 66 percent urged celebrities to pay more attention to their behaviour, and 42 percent expressed their shock at Sun's illegal act.

The top sport star apologized for his behavior on Monday.

It's not the first time Sun has been punished by the college. He was accused of "indiscipline" in February and allegedly fell out with his coach over a relationship with an air hostess.
