Indonesian president declares COVID-19 national disaster

Indonesian President Joko Widodo here on Monday officially declared the outbreak of the COVID-19 a national disaster as the number of the death due to the disease in the country continue to surge.

The declaration is incorporated in the Presidential Decree on the Spread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) as A National Disaster, due to the increasing number of people who perished by the disease and the huge amount of material losses as well as the widespread of the social and economic implications.

In the decree, the Indonesian president called on governors, district heads and mayors who lead the efforts to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak in their respective areas to refer to the central government's policies on handling the disaster.

Indonesia has reported 316 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, lower than the number on Sunday when it was recorded at 399 cases, bringing the total to 4,557 with 399 fatalities and 380 people recovering, the government's spokesman for the Novel Coronavirus-Related Matters Achmad Yurianto said.
