**PHNOM PENH, May 23, (APD) ** - Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries will conduct the evaluation for quality checks on rice millers, cited that the recheck is to reply the request from the Chinese government.
China asked Cambodia to conduct checks on the quality of rice millers who are in the list that Cambodia submitted to China for checking, said Ngin Chhay, director-general of Agriculture at Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.
The asking to recheck was made after Cambodia submitted 40 applications of rice millers which the ministry of agriculture approved after checking for quality, Mr. Chhay said.
“China has asked the general directorate of agriculture to conduct the evaluation for quality on the rice millers which are in the list of exporting rice to China,” Mr. Chhay said. “China wants only the rice millers that can export in the big amount of milled rice to China.”
The officials from the ministry and Cambodia Rice Federation will soon conduct rechecking the quality, he said.
“In the recheck this time, we will focus on the zone of rice production and we want to set a rice miller to represent in one zone that the rice miller located so that the number of rice millers will be limited,” Mr. Chhay said.
Currently, 26 rice exporters are in the list of eligible for export rice to China. They passed the quality checks both from officials from Agriculture Minister and an expert from China.
There are currently 26 rice millers who are allowed to export milled rice to China, but only 9 milled rice exporters have failed to export to China, pushing the recheck for quality of the milled rice exporters,
China is the biggest market for Cambodia’s milled rice. From 2019 to 2020, China increase quota of 400,000 tons of milled rice from Cambodia, increasing from 300,000 last year.
