Hollywood actress Salma Hayek: There are 'way too many action films'

Actress Salma Hayek has told Sky News there are "way too many action films" being made and "it's hard to find a really good one".

She thinks cinemagoers are looking for movies that stand out and claims her new offering, The Hitman's Bodyguard, is "really different".

Hayak, 50, plays the wife of Samuel L Jackson's assassin character in the action-comedy.

She said: "I think that there's way too many action films, and it's really hard to find a really good one.

"So I think that more than people looking for stand alone, they're looking for stand apart because there are so many that are alike.

"And this is what I think the strength of this film is, that it's really different."

Jackson added: "Honestly there's a lot of bad stuff."

What is it like to work with Ryan Reynolds?

He told Sky News the movie will appeal to viewers who want to see themselves reflected on screen.

The actor, 68, plays a hitman trying to make his way to the International Court of Justice at The Hague in order to testify against a villain played by Gary Oldman.

Jackson's character is being protected by a bodyguard (Ryan Reynolds) and the two get in and out of various scrapes along the way.

The star thinks that not being part of a franchise will help the film to stand out from other summer blockbusters.

"I think people like seeing movies that are about people that are more like them, than not like them," he explained.

"Superhero movies are superhero movies, they're fine, but people like seeing ordinary people do extraordinary things or enjoy their lives the way they might enjoy them, and they can relate to them in a very honest and real kind of way."

Much of the comedy in The Hitman's Bodyguard comes from the stark difference between Jackson's instinctive hitman, and Reynolds' preparation-obsessed bodyguard.

Jackson's character spends much of the movie mocking Reynolds' straight-man, but he says off-camera they had a very different relationship.

"He had his kids with him when we were in Sofia (Bulgaria), and here (in the UK) so we spent time talking about kids, and life and all that kind of stuff," Jackson told Sky News.

"When it got to the scenes we just did the scenes which was kind of fun. Ryan was very much letting me set the pace in those scenes which I thought was… Hey but you're number one on the call sheet, it's your job, and he's like no, it's your job.

"We just made it work and it was very give and take, he's very giving."

Hayek says she was encouraged to make her character larger than life, in order to make the relationship between her and the hitman believable.

"She only has a couple of scenes in the film, but the film revolves around her," Hayek explained.

"Also Sam is a very, very strong personality so they gave me a mandate because this character had to match that personality."

"Also there is a timing for the comedy of him and Ryan. It was important that the girls wouldn't fall behind, that they'd stay with them. So they gave me a mandate to try to make this character unforgettable and that would match very well with Sam."

The Hitman's Bodyguard is out in cinemas in the UK on 18 August.
