The story of Australia's famous food Vegemite inventor, Cyril Callister, will be brought to screen soon after the creator's grandson sold the movie rights to his book, the local media reported on Friday.

Jamie Callister's book, The Man Who Invented Vegemite, tells the story of his grandfather, an Australian chemist and food technologist who developed the brown salty spread.

The book is about to be turned into a movie by the Melbourne-based firm, The Film Company.

"It's a wonderful story and it certainly encapsulates a lot of the most significant events of the first half of last century," Callister told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Callister says he is happy to see the story live on through media productions.

"It's not a great deal of money but I'm excited all the same because it was always my intention to make it into a movie because it's always such a great story," he said.
