The Chinese embassy in Pakistan has said it is working to secure the release of a Chinese couple abducted by unknown gunmen in the northwestern city of Quetta on Wednesday.

The kidnappers forced the two into a vehicle at gunpoint and drove away. They were studying Urdu at a language center in Quetta. Initially, three Chinese were taken but one managed to escape as the kidnappers began firing into the air to scare off onlookers. A passerby was injured in a shootout while trying to prevent the abduction, according to a local government spokesperson.

Local police have been deployed at entry and exit points of the city to perform checks. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
