At least 123 people have been killed and 40 people were injured after an oil tanker caught fire in Bahawalpur district, Punjab Province in eastern Pakistan on Sunday morning, Geo TV reported citing rescue sources.

Witnesses said some people were smoking at the scene after the oil tanker overturned, which could have helped start the deadly blaze.

The incident has already left around 40 people injured as many people in the area had collected the leaking oil from the tanker, media reported.

Dozens of vehicles, including 75 motorbikes and four cars, were engulfed in the blaze near the national highway.

Rescue operations are still underway.
