France's COVID-19 death toll surpassed the 100,000 mark on Thursday, making it only the eighth country globally and the third in Europe to reach the tally.

Data from the health ministry's GEODES website said French hospitals recorded 300 COVID-19 fatalities in the last 24 hours pushing the cumulative tally beyond 100,000.

The country's death toll is now only shadowed by figured registered in the United States, Brazil, Mexico, India, the United Kingdom, Italy and Russia.

According to Reuters, France's fatality rate from the disease has now nearly doubled from just over 52,000 at the end of its second lockdown at the end of November.

Data from the health ministry also showed that 5,924 people were in intensive care units on Thursday, up from 5,902 a day earlier.
