Theapproach,oftenreferredtoas“flippedclassroom”study,allowsstudentstostudytheirclassroomlessonsinadvanceusingonlinecomputerprograms.Onlineprogrammedlearningpreparesstudentsforrealtime,in-classengagement.OriginallyproposedbytwoAmericaneducationistsnearlyadecadeago,theconceptisbasedonthetheorythat“pre-learning”onthecomputerallowsstudentstopickupessentialconceptssothattheyaremorereadilyabletoabsorbknowledgeintheclassroom.
ResearchbytheHongKongFederationofYouthGroup(HKFYG)foundthatmorethanhalfof423studentrespondentsfromsecondaryschoolssaidtheirindependentlearningskillsimprovedwiththehelpofonlineprogrammedlearning.Theysaidtheywerebetterabletoengagetheirin-classstudies.Over40percentsaidthatthe“pre-learning”studieshelpedtobecomemoreinterestedinlearningaboutcertainsubjects.
ExpertsatHKFYGanticipatethatlocal,secondaryschoolswillexperimentwiththenewlearningenvironmentandtheylookforwardtoagovernment-sponsoredpilotschemetogivetheapproachwiderexposure.ResearchconsultantSteveMansaidtheflippedclassroomhasbeenwidelyadoptedinUSandEuropeancountriesandisbeginningtocatchoninSingapore,TaiwanandJapan.TheapproachremainsnoveltoHongKong.
Mannotedthathoweveronly30percentofstudentssurveyedsaidtheywouldbeinclinedtologontoopentheonlineprograms,topreviewlessonsbeforeclass.GigiAuYeung,whowasinvolvedinpreliminaryresearch,saidevaluationshouldbeprovidedforvirtualclassroomstudiestoensurethatstudentprogressandefficiencyareevaluated.Whilestudentsmaybeunsupervisedonthevirtuallearningsystem,shesaidthereareotherevaluativemeanstodeterminehowwellstudentsfarewiththeprogramincludingobservationbyteachersandbytesting.
