An Australian who indecently assaulted a young girl dressed in a fairytale costume has finally been caught after being on the run for almost a month.

New South Wales police said in a statement on Friday that the girl who was dressed in a yellow and blue fairytale costume was assaulted on Aug. 22 after a man offered her a lift in a car which she accepted.

"She got in the car and when they were near Stockrington (in the Hunter region), the man stopped the car and allegedly indecently assaulted her before she got out of the car and ran away," police said.

"A short time later, a passing motorist stopped to render assistance, contacting police and emergency services."

"Officers conducted an extensive search of the area for the man.

However, he was not located," it said.

Detectives from the State Crime Command's Child Abuse Squad Newcastle office commenced an investigation and appealed for public assistance to locate the vehicle and male driver.

On Thursday morning, NSW police made a breakthrough and found the man.

A search warrant was executed at a home in Argenton and a motor vehicle was seized at another location.

"A 36-year-old man was arrested at a home and taken to Belmont Police Station where he was charged with aggravated indecent assault," police said.

The man has been refused bail and will appear at Belmont Local Court to face charges on Friday。
