The CEO of electric car giant Tesla posted on Twitter two photos of the Tesla Model 3 as the first production unit of the electric cars has rolled off the assembly line at the company's Fremont factory.

The Tesla Model 3 plays a crucial part in the company's vision to bring environment-friendly cars to the mainstream.

Starting at 35,000 US dollars, the new model is aimed at the middle-class market.

Earlier this week, Elon Musk announced that Tesla would start producing its first mass-market Model 3 sedans on Friday, ahead of the original schedule, with the first deliveries set for July 28, when the lucky first 30 customers would receive the keys to their brand new vehicles.

Tesla CEO unveiled photos of the first new Model 3 cars on twitter, a day after production on the new electric car started.

According to the production schedule, 100 units of Model 3 would be out by August and another 1,500 units by September, Musk said.

He also revealed an ambitious goal of “20,000 Model 3 cars per month by December".

Photos of the Tesla Model 3 were revealed late on Saturday.

The California-based electric car maker lost its place as the biggest US automaker by market capitalization on Thursday, handing over the crown to General Motors (GM), after a slump in share prices erased more than 12 billion US dollars of its value.

Musk thanked Tesla's board member Ira Ehrenpreis for his early 46th birthday gift.

Tesla board member Ira Ehrenpreis became the first one to place a full deposit on Model 3, but his order will drive into Musk's own garage as he decided to gift the first vehicle to the company's CEO for his 46th birthday.
