University of Oklahoma campus returns to normal after gunshots report

President of the University of Oklahoma David Boren said Wednesday a report about shots fired on campus earlier in the day "appears to be a false alarm" and the school has returned to its normalcy.

When he addressed the media at 1 p.m. CST (1900 GMT), Boren revealed more details about the reported shooting.

In a live TV broadcast, Boren said the report of a possible shooting came from the faculty who thought they heard three shots fired on Wednesday morning.

"The faculty member was very sincere in thinking they heard shots," Boren said.The faculty member then called police and the university immediately sent alert texts and tweets to students.

A thorough search conducted in Gould Hall where the shots were believed to ring has yielded no evidence.

"It appears to be a false alarm.We have not been able to confirm that any shots were fired,"said Boren, who added another top-to-bottom sweep would be conducted "just in case."

The university's website announced about one hour later Gould Hall has been cleared for occupancy and classes in that building are resuming. All other university operations and classes will continue as normal.

The university is located in Norman, about 30 kilometers south of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
