An Indian policeman who served as a security guard for a legislator was arrested Thursday for allegedly shooting two young people in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The two were shot and critically wounded late Wednesday evening at Bandipora, about 55 km north of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A personal security officer of legislator Nizam-ud-Din Bhat has been arrested in connection with a firing incident in which two civilians were wounded," said a police official in Bandipora. "A case stands registered in this regard and investigations are underway."

Locals said the wounded civilians Mudasir Ahmad Baba, 24, and Majeed Amad Khan, 30,were immediately sent to district hospital, then referred to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar for specialized treatment.

The policeman served as security guard for Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, a legislator affiliated with region's main opposition and pro-India Peoples Democratic Party.

A newspaper report said Bhat was in Jammu, the region's winter capital, when the shooting took place.

"The reason behind the shooting incident is a land dispute between two families," Tariq Ahmad, a local resident was quoted as saying.
