Phnom Penh, Nov.28 (APD) -- Cambodia imported 5,000 tonnes of salt from China which is arrived yesterday to supply in to the consumption while the local production doesn’t meet the demand affecting from the heavy rain.
The Kampot-Kep Salt Association, said the association imports some 30,000 tonnes fulfill the demand since the unfavorable weather affect the production.
“The First leg of import of 3,000 tons already arrived at Phnom Penh Port. By the plan, we are going to import total 5,000 tonnes,” said the representative.
“We adjust the importing salt amount for our three-month consumption during the period we cannot produce the salt and the next two or three the Prahok (fermented fish) production season will be coming,”he said.
“If we don’t have salt for them, the prahok producers will complain about it, so we adjust the import to meet their demand, then when the salt production season turns back to normal we will no longer import,” Mr Baraing said.
In a case that the production will not be able to produce, they will consider another solution as now they start preparing to produce the salt. From the end of January or early February, the salt production start to produce enough salt if there is no rain.
The local market currently demands between 80,000 and 100,000 tonnes of the commodity a year. There are 4,657 hectares of land use for harvesting salt with 200 farmers.
